What is WaterWood?
Waterwood is an impressive estate located on the shores of Lake Erie in Vermilion, Ohio. The property was developed in the late 1980s by inventor Donald Brown and his wife, Shirley. Donald Brown was renowned for inventing the drop ceiling and founded Donn Products, which he sold in 1986. That same year, he began developing the Waterwood estate on a 60-acre lakefront lot, taking three years to grade the land to his specifications. The home, completed in 1991, spans 38,000 square feet and features over 50 rooms, including six bedrooms, two indoor pools, a private marina, and a helicopter landing pad. Modernist architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen designed it, though Brown and Jacobsen eventually parted ways due to creative differences. The design includes unique elements like rotating floors, glass walkways, and a dining room with a turntable to ensure all guests can enjoy lake views.
Waterwood was intended to serve as the Browns' dream home where they could age in place. It included features like wide hallways for scooters, elevators, and plans for a doctor's office and barbershop on the lower level. After Donald and Shirley Brown passed away in 2010, their son Ken purchased the property in 2014, and Nicole inherited it in 2018. The property was eventually purchased for a future wellness community and resort.
