A Brooklyn-born Ivy Leaguer with an MBA from NYU and experience selling ad space at Sports Illustrated and Time magazine—hardly the typical path to becoming a perennial Winemaker of the Year. Dan Petroski discovered fine wine while entertaining clients at Manhattan’s top restaurants. When The Wall Street Journal came calling with a job offer, he instead took a step back to reflect.

A year in Sicily and an internship at Valle dell’Acate set him on a new course. Returning to Manhattan with plans for a career in wine sales, he soon received an unexpected offer to work harvest at Larkmead, one of Napa Valley’s most storied cabernet sauvignon producers. Despite his success crafting Napa’s flagship varietal, Dan’s passion for Italian white wines led him to establish Massican, which remains his primary focus today.
