In a world where technology seems to uproot tradition in every sense of the word, López de Heredia represents timeless, artisan winemaking and remains steadfast in its practice of “maintaining eternal principles and criteria”. The wines, which are some of the most sought after in Rioja, Spain, are still made the way they were when the winery was founded 146 years ago.
A rarity in Rioja, López de Heredia uses only estate bottled fruit from their prized vineyards—Tondonia, Cubillo, Bosconia, and Zaconia—with the idea that the only way to get the best fruit is to care for the vines themselves. Tondonia, their prized vineyard, offers primarily old vines (45+ years on average), is farmed organically and exhibits exceptional terroir; grapes from this vineyard are reserved for their best wines, with truly exceptional vintages becoming Gran Reservas. In order to foster greater complexity and elegance, López de Heredia wines are released 5–10 years after harvest, and both the reds and whites are built to age for decades.
We are looking forward to pouring some very special older bottlings from this venerable producer. Martin Reyes M.W. and Kristen Hollowaty of WineWise Imports will be on hand to offer valuable insights and help us showcase the delicacy, intricacy, grace and longevity of these extraordinary wines.
