HOSTED BY Indian Valley American Wine Society:
The Loire Valley in northern France includes wine regions situated along the river Loire from the Muscadet region near the city of Nantes on the Atlantic coast to the region of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé just southeast of the city of Orléans. The Loire is divided into four main subregions which include a total of 87 appellations. These subregions are Nantes (Muscadet wine and others), Anjou & Saumur (Fruit-foward and Cremant styles), Touraine (Vouvray, Chinon, and Bourgueil), and the Center region (Sancerre and Pouilly Fume’). We will cover three of the four subregions in this tasting, featuring whites (including a Cremant), rose’ and reds. The best Loire wines compete well with other regions in France and the world yet have characteristics that are distinctively “Loire” (in a good way). The Loire Valley has a long history of winemaking dating back to the 1st century. In the High Middle Ages, the wines of the Loire Valley were the most esteemed wines in England and France, even more prized than those from Bordeaux.
Tasting Fee: $31 pp
