With special guest Robert Biale . . .
Patriarch, Pietro Biale planted his first Zinfandel vines in 1937 and started selling his grapes on the bulk market. Shortly thereafter, his son Aldo took over the care of the vineyard. Being a true Italian, he wanted to make wine for his family and friends. Back then, if you wanted a jug of Aldo Biale’s bootleg wine delivered along with your other farm products, you asked for a “Black Chicken” which was the code word for a bottle of wine. Since party lines existed back then, one could not be too careful about what they were saying over the phone.
Those original vines, over 85 years old, are the oldest Zinfandel vines in Napa Valley’s Oakknoll region, today known as Aldo’s vineyard. After decades of providing their premium Zinfandel fruit to other producers, the Biales decided in 1991 to produce their own wine as Robert Biale Vineyards. The inaugural wine was a 400 case production of the 1991 “Aldo’s Vineyard” Zinfandel made from 60 year-old vines. Since then, Robert Biale Vineyards has consistently made some of the most complex and delicious vineyard designate Zinfandels produced in California. Robert Biale wines are universally appreciated for their generous fruit yet well balanced, structured style, as well as for the endearing history of the Biale family and the legacy Aldo left to future generations..
For this tasting, you will also be treated to an array of some of the most distinctive and expressive Zinfandel bottlings to be found anywhere in California.
