Arguably the most well-known of the Southern Rhône’s crus, the name Châteauneuf-du-Pape
translates to “new home of the Pope.” It references a time in the early 14th century when Pope
John XXII built a summer castle in the area, the remains of which are still found in the main village
in France. Nowhere does Grenache, Syrah or Mourvèdre shine quite like they do from the Rhone.
But here the finesse of “the blend” is showcased in the region of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The
blends are created from 15 potential varieties although this number has been debated. Grenache
Noir, which is the backbone of almost every red wine in the region, accounts for nearly three
quarters of all vines. Syrah and then Mourvèdre are the next most planted varieties. Syrah alone
makes up about the same amount of acreage as that of the next 19 varieties combined.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards are farmed organically or biodynamically, and the region's
abundant sunshine and frequent wind (called le mistral) practically preclude the need for treating
the fields with herbicides or pesticides. The wines themselves are equally pure, their flavors
rarely masked by aging in new oak. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC is famous for its cobblestone
soil—deep piles of softball-sized rocks. But there’s more to the geological landscape than that. The primary influences on the climate of Châteauneuf-du-Pape are the Mediterranean Sea, the latitude, and the Mistral winds. Join us to taste through some of our favorite versions and learn more about this fascinating region.
