It’s a story of two people – Michael Swanson and Cheri Reese – who returned home to find the authenticity of a simple life and fulfill a deep desire to make tangible, artisanal products of unquestionable quality and value. The northernmost distillery in the contiguous United States, Far North Spirits makes premium, heritage spirits inspired by Minnesota’s character and agricultural abundance. Located just 25 miles from the Canadian border, we are one of only a handful of estate distilleries nation-wide to also grow our own grains.
Far North Roknar Whiskey
Aged for 16 months in 15-gallon charred oak barrels and finished in Cognac casks. With a mash bill of 80% rye, 10% corn and 10% malt barley, Roknar marries aromas of brown sugar and cinnamon with vanilla bean, roasted almonds and freshly sawn oak. These scents are precisely restated as flavors on a butter-smooth palate, with additional notes of smoked ham and balsa wood. Finishing with a hint of soft-baked pretzels, Roknar lingers cheerfully with a warming note of star anise.
Far North Bodalen Bourbon
Far North Spirits in Minnesota is best known for its Rye whiskies, but started distilling Bødalen Bourbon in 2015. This 5-year-old bottling comes from one of the distillery’s oldest barrels, and is made from a mashbill of 60% heirloom corn, 30% AC Hazlet winter rye, and 10% malted barley. The nose is aromatic with a nice balance of oak, tobacco, leather, buttered popcorn, soft spices led by a touch of nutmeg, apple cobbler, and Manuka honey. The taste also has a good complex balance of tobacco, figs, plums, baking chocolate, Manuka honey, charred oak, apple cobbler, and soft spices. The finish is long with touches of baked fruits, cocoa, and oak.
Far North Solvieg Gin
Solveig \SOUL-vai\ is a uniquely lush and verdant New American Style gin distilled with 8 botanicals including red grapefruit, organic thyme and lavender. Offering a nose of citrus, pine cones and a hint of lavender, Solveig combines a creamy entry with an almost ethereal lightness on the palate. Complex and concentrated in the glass after twenty-four hours of air, the gin shows exceptional balance in the mid-palate, with added flavors of thyme and coriander. The finish is rich, persistent, and almost cool, with lingering notes of black olives and fresh grain.
Far North Alander Spiced Rum
Ålander \OH-lan-der\ is made in small batches from domestically sourced Demerara and Turbinado sugar. We use whole bean spices commonly found in Scandinavian baking and infuse them by hand. No artificial color or flavors are added. Showing a nose of allspice, nutmeg, clove and ginger snap cookies. It has background aromas of mocha, cardamom and butterscotch, that give way to root beer, vanilla and a touch of peppermint. All combined by a smooth texture with clean, crisply defined flavors, it finishes with sweet notes of caramel and banana bread. Top 100 Spirits of 2017 – Wine Enthusiast
