September celebrates some of the most iconic food holidays in the calendar year — National Rueben Day on Sept. 15, and National Bakery Day on Sept. 30. Chompie’s, the valley’s go-to classic Jewish American Bakery and Deli, not only features Colossal Rueben sandwiches on its regular menu, the new Phoenix location houses the brand’s in-house bakery, which produces the vast majority of Chompie’s homemade bakery delights from bagels and bread (including gluten-friendly and keto-friendly versions) as well as classic cakes, cookies and pastries.
A Rueben at Chompie’s could tap into nostalgia — with the Classic Grandpa Ruby’s featuring either corned beef or pastrami, grilled sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and 1,000 island dressing on grilled rye — or shake things up a bit with Frank’s Fowl Ball featuring hot sliced turkey breast, coleslaw, Swiss Cheese and 1,000 island dressing on grilled rye. Add some coleslaw to the Classic Grandpa Ruby’s Reuben and it becomes Rachel’s Motown, a monstrous favorite that requires extra napkins (and possibly a to-go box for leftovers). There is no wrong way to Reuben at Chompie’s.
And though Sept. 30 is recognized as National Reuben Day, every day is National Bakery Day at Chompie’s! The bakery cases at each location are the star of the show — giving diners an up-close view at freshly baked goodies inspired from cultures all around the world, from cannoli’s to Mexican wedding cookies, and of course, Sesame Street-inspired character cupcakes, a kid favorite!
