Unique wine names. Unique labels. One unique winemaker.
On December 17th at 7 p.m. the Pennsylvania Wine Society will host an event at the Hilton Harrisburg highlighting the wines of Charles Smith. For more than 20 years Charles Smith has been producing amazing wines that proclaim, “I am from Washington.” However, even though he was born and raised an hour from Napa Valley, CA, he didn’t discover his love of wine until he moved to Europe. He spent a decade touring Europe as a rock band manager. The wining and dining of the rock n’ roll life on the road sparked his interest in wine.
When he returned to the United States, he found a way to explore his interest in wine by opening a wine shop on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle. However, Charles felt to compelled to create the wines, not just to sell them. With almost nothing in his pockets, he found a way to produce his first vintage of 330 cases of 1999 K Syrah, which he sold out of the back of his 1987 Astro van.
From that beginning, Charles Smith and his wines have grown in reputation. Charles Smith is the only person to be named Winemaker of the Year by both Wine Enthusiast (2014) and Food & Wine (2009). His wines continue to be recognized by leading publications, such as Wine Advocate, Wine Spector, Wine Enthusiast and Wine & Spirts with 198 wines achieving a score of 95 points and above, and more that 768 wines achieving scores 90 points and above. And in February 2021 Charles Smith announced a new name as umbrella over his brands; HOUSE OF SMITH. Anna Mosier, President of HOUSE OF SMITH said that their goal “is to provide wine for everyone and for every table. Whether it’s a celebration or having a nice glass of wine with your Tuesday evening meal, we want to make sure that our wines are available for every life occasion.”
For our tasting we will sample 6 wines from the Charles Smith label (now owned by Constellation Brands Inc.) and one from the HOUSE OF SMITH Substance label:
¨ 2019 Band of Roses: We will start the evening with a cool dry Rosé made from 100% Washington State Pinot Gris.
¨ 2020 Kung Fu Girl Riesling: The story goes that Charles was eating Chinese takeout and watching a fight scene in a notorious martial arts film when he had an idea: a killer white wine to be paired with Asian food.
¨ 2018 Substance Sauvignon Blanc Sunset Vineyard: The Substance label was created with the goal of creating the best value-priced Cabernet Sauvignon in America. It has expanded to include red blends, Merlot, Chardonnay and this Loire-style Sauvignon Blanc.
¨ 2016 Eve Chardonnay Washington State: 100% Washington State Chardonnay, producing a dry, creamy and smooth wine.
¨ 2019 Velvet Devil Merlot: When the movie “Sideways” created anti-Merlot sentiments, Charles set out to rebuff the movie’s unflattering portrayal. One taste of Velvet Devil and you’ll know he succeeded.
¨ 2018 Boom Boom! Syrah: This spicy Syrah is a tribute to Charles first lost love - a woman names “Boom Boom” O’Brien - and it’s one the biggest, boldest Syrahs of all time.
¨ 2016 Chateau Smith Cabernet Sauvignon: While Charles Smith Wines does not actually have a chateau the Chateau Smith Cabernet Sauvignon stays true to the old-world winemaking style from Bordeaux.
