Meet the Artist: Jean Guitard, Puzzle Painter. Wanderer. “My style is my own – inspired by graffiti in Mexico and my singular experiences.”
Spectacular, tantalizing, awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping. All adjectives used by Vine Styles’ customers on first (and second) exposure to Jean’s Puzzle-Painting series, currently on display in the store.
A lifelong artist, Jean’s first art showing was at the age-of-17 at the Chateau Champlain, in his hometown of Montreal. Since moving to Calgary in 1990, he’s split time between careers in the art world and the hospitality industry. A fixture in the community of Sunnyside, it’s where Jean has lived and played ever since, working either at Brasserie Kensington, or at his sun-drenched art studio off Memorial Drive.
Jean’s work is displayed on the walls of - amongst others - Vendome Gallery Café, The Leighton Centre, Ranchmen’s Private Club, and The Loft Galeria in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Now 60-years of age, he dedicated full-time to the art world six-years ago, after being inspired on a trip to Puerto Vallarta by Mayan artworks and, believe it or not, street graffiti. In his current style, called Puzzle Painting, Jean paints when he feels a kaleidoscope of moments and images that he expresses on canvas. His work is intricate; with dabs of encircled gold, delicate string-like strands and geometric squares. Vivid and visually pleasing, every canvas tells a story.
Come and meet the artist and discuss his thoughts, ideas and inspirations…oh, and enjoy a taste of wine…or two.
