The summer solstice aka the beginning of the summer season, has long been celebrated by cultures around the world:

  • In Ancient Egypt, the summer solstice coincided with the rising of the Nile River. As it was crucial to predict this annual flooding, the Egyptian New Year began at this important solstice.
  • In centuries past, the Irish would cut hazel branches on solstice eve to be used in searching for gold, water, and precious jewels.
  • Many European cultures hold what are known as Midsummer celebrations at the solstice, which include gatherings at Stonehenge and the lighting of bonfires on hilltops.


Well the Australian Wine Society of Toronto (AWS) has its own special way of welcoming the beginning of summer - savory hors d'oeuvre and sparkling wine on the patio, followed by a wonderful 3 course paired meal in the grand dining room.


It has been 36 months since our last Summer Solstice celebration at the Faculty Club. Join us for a long anticipated renewal of a traditional annual event for AWS.


The evening will begin with a wine and hors d'oeuvre reception on the outdoor patio (weather permitting), after which we will relocate to the magnificent Wedgewood Room for a wonderful meal provided by Chef Brad Smith and team. As usual, Cellar Master Joe Gentile has selected matching wines for our enjoyment.


Reception begins at 6:30 p.m..

Our three course dinner will include:


First Course (choice of one)

  • Summer Wedge Salad - Grilled Corn and Fire Roasted Pepper, Honey, Yogurt, and Mint Dressing. Topped with Crispy Fried Chick Peas and Dried Sumac.
  • Truffle Mushroom Soup (Dairy Free) - With fresh garden chives

 

Main Course (choice of one)

  • Pan Roasted Salmon - Seven Grain Pilaf, Seasonal Vegetables, Compound Butter
  • 8 oz Ontario Striploin - Peppercorn Sauce, Roasted Fingerling Potato, Grilled Pepper and King Mushroom fricassee.
  • Moroccan Bowl - Roasted Cauliflower, Peppers, Carrots & Onions in a Moroccan Spiced Coconut Broth. Steamed Rice, Cashews, Scaffoldings and Crispy Fried Chickpea 


Dessert Course (choice of one)

  • Chocolate Torte - Raspberry Cream, Blackberry Jam.
  • Fresh Fruit Plate - Sliced Melon, Cantaloupe, Pineapple and Fresh Berries
