While the history of viticulture can be traced to the Danube River and the heart of Austria - the heart of Europe, really - the creative wine scene is still young and developing in this country. There are new designations of origin (DAC) still being established today, and native varietals that are rapidly gaining distinction but still are globally unsung. Well, I plan to sing the praises of Austria's diverse wine styles this Friday with a lineup of wines that are both familiar, like Gruner Veltliner and Riesling, and unique, like sparkling Riesling, an age-worthy indigenous red and rare nobly sweet wine. Discover something new in this snapshot of Austrian Wine!

  • Steininger Sekt Reserve Riesling 2018 – Sale $31.49 - 92 pts Falstaff - "Medium yellow-green, silver reflexes. Fine white peach nuances, a hint of lychee and passion fruit, attractive bouquet. Firm, tight-meshed, vineyard peach, freshly structured, present sweetness of honey and apricot in the finish."
  • Gobelsburg Gruner Veltliner Langenlois 2020 – Sale $29.99 - 92 pts Wine Advocate / 92 pts Falstaff “Delicately restrained spice, a hint of orange zest, yellow apple fruit, nuances of mango, tobacco touch, white pepper. Juicy, white pome fruit, tender after ringlotte, fine fruit sweetness, freshly structured, mineral-lemony in the finish, a lively food companion." Falstaff
  • Tegernseerhof Riesling Ried Kellerberg Smaragd 2019 – Sale $44.89 / 3+ btls $39.99 / 6+ btls $34.99 - 96 pts Wine Advocate / 95-97 pts Falstaff / 95 pts Wine Enthusiast - “From four plots with different soils (from loess to gneiss, altitudes and expositions from southeast to southwest), Martin Mittelbach’s 2019 Ried Kellerberg Riesling Smaragd is deep, complex and excitingly stony on the fine and bright yet coolish nose that delivers flinty as well as crushed lemon aromas. A fabulous nose! Rich and intense but elegant and endlessly vital and mineral, with stimulating salinity and very fine tannins on the finish, this is a great, complex, refined and elegant Kellerberg with a mouthwatering finish. A Must Buy from the vintage.” WA
  • Anton Bauer Reserve 'Artist' Blaufrankisch 2017 – Sale $39.99 – 97 pts Wine Enthusiast - "Subtle notes of ripe blueberry need to be shaken awake on the shy nose. Swirling also brings out a note of cinnamon. The dense palate surprises with its inherent, almost cooling freshness and its superfine tannins. This is elegant and poised despite its undoubted power, a wonderfully light touch has revealed the inherent grace of this wine. Drink by 2040." WE
  • Kracher Cuvee Beerenauslese 2018 (375 mL) - Sale $36.79 (Tasting Special!) - 94 pts James Suckling / 93 pts Wine Advocate - "Blending 70% Welschriesling with 30% Chardonnay, the 2018 Cuvée Beerenauslese offers a fascinating, precise and spicy quince and refreshing lemon zest aroma and even salinity. Bottled with 135 grams per liter of residual sugar, this is a highly elegant, refined and perfectly balanced Cuvée with precision, lingering salinity and delicate freshness. Sustainable candied fruit aromas. This is a gorgeous BA that should go perfectly well with mature cheese, certainly Kaiserschmarrn (torn pancake) and salted popcorn. Tasted in February 2021." WA
