After his first visit to Tuscany's Tolaini estate in 2016, Wine Spectator's Bruce Sanderson concluded, "This is an estate to watch." We'd add that it's even more an "estate to taste" - which you can do with winemaker Francesco Rosi in this exciting Spotlight wine class!
Pier Luigi Tolaini left his home in Luca at age 19 to find work, but promising himself he'd return to Tuscany someday to show his family how to make really good wine. It took him a while - he spent the next 40+ years in Canada, ultimately building a prosperous trucking business. But in 1998 her purchased a 119 acre Chianti Classico property and set out to make "really good" wine.
Although in Chianti Classico, Tolaini's first wines focused on French grapes like Cabernet Suavingnon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot to create "super-Tuscan" blends with varrying amounts of Sangiovese. But today it's his Chianti Classico Vigneto Montebello No. 7 Gran Selezione that wins some of the highest praise.
After opening with a refreshing Italian while, with Tolaini’s winemaker Francesco Rosi we’ll sample five of the estate’s fine wines:
Tolaini Al Passo 2014 (Sangiovese/Merlot; JS 92)
Tolaini Valdisanti 2014 (Cabernet Sauvignon/Sangiovese; WS 93)
Tolaini Chianti Classico Vallenuova 2016 (WA 91)
Tolaini Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2013 (WS 93)
Tolaini Picconero 2011 (Merlot/Cabernet Franc; WS 93)
As always, we’ll have light snacks to nibble with the wines and plenty of great conversation to share. Reserve your seats today online at www.cbcwine.com, by emailing us at wineteam@cbcwine.com or calling 703.356.6500.
