For the eleventh year in a row, Wine Vault & Bistro is pleased to announce the return of Bokisch Vineyards.  We're serving an authentic Spanish-style 5-course dinner paired with four of their wines including their limited production Graciano that is usually not available to the public.  Owners and winemakers Liz and Markus Bokisch will be down from Lodi to personally host this dinner.  Those of you who went on our "Vineyards of California" tour several years ago will no doubt have fond memories of the dinner we had on their lawn next to the vineyards ... and especially drinking Tempranillo out of a "porron!"  If you're not familiar with the wines of Bokisch Vineyards, here's some background info.

After Markus worked several years as a viticulturist for Joseph Phelps Vineyards in NapaValley, he and Liz moved to Spain for a year to learn first-hand about growing their first love: Spanish varietals.  Upon returning to the U.S. they discovered that Lodi had the ideal climate and terroir for growing Spanish varietals, and two years later Bokisch Vineyards was founded in the mid nineties when they planted their first vineyard there.  They've been there ever since, and are pioneers not only in growing traditional Spanish varietals, but also in sustainable winegrowing practices.

We've carried Bokisch wines here almost since we first opened over thirteen years ago and have constantly been amazed at their high QPR (Quality Price Ratio): the quality is high and the price is low.  These are absolutely amazing values for solid wines of this complexity and quality.  Each one, without exception is a winner, and we are confident that everyone attending will agree.  Hope to see you here!  Wine notes and bottle prices are at the end of this announcement if you're interested.  Here's the line-up:

NOTE: Due to the complexity of this menu we regret that we will be unable to accommodate vegetarian requests or extensive menu aberrations.

COST

Cost for the complete dinner including all five courses and all four wines is $69.50 per person.  Sales tax and an 18% gratuity will be added to the cost of all dinners.  Due to limited seating, CREDIT CARD RESERVATIONS ARE AN ABSOLUTE MUST.  We accept Visa and MasterCard only.

SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS

Due to the complexity of this menu we regret that we will be unable to accommodate vegetarian requests.  If you have any other special dietary needs, please let us know when you RSVP, not when you arrive.  We will do our best to accommodate special dietary needs if we can and if given advance notice.  Please be aware that last minute menu aberration requests without advance notice will be impossible for us to accommodate.

CANCELLATION POLICY

You may cancel your reservation up to 72 hours in advance without penalty.  NO REFUNDS WILL BE ISSUED WITH LESS THAN 72-HOUR NOTICE unless we are able to replace your cancellation at the last minute.  (See below for groups over 4 people.)

LARGE GROUPS (OVER 4)

If you want to come with a group of friends, please make one reservation for your entire party so we can reserve a block of seats for you ... however, in the interest of fairness to others, we reserve the right to limit the number of people on a single reservation at our discretion.  The cancellation period for canceling the ENTIRE reservation without penalty is doubled from the standard 72 hours (see above) to 144 hours (6 days).  If you need to cancel only 1 or 2 people, the standard 72-hour notice still applies.

WHEN

The dinners begin promptly at 6:30, but we HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend that you arrive earlier to better your chances of getting a closer parking space.  The bar opens at 5:45 if you'd like to mingle with the winemaker and enjoy an adult beverage before dinner.

WHERE

Wine Vault & Bistro is located in the heart of San Diego between Little Italy and OldTown at 3731-A India Street on the upper terrace.  Follow the black handrail from the sidewalk up the stairs to our front door.

PARKING

Valet parking is available for $8.00.  The drop-off point is two doors south of our entrance in front of Shakespeare Pub at the corner of India and Winder.  On-street parking is also usually available within a 3-block radius.  Remember that it’s OK to park in yellow commercial zones on Sunday and that meters are also not enforced on Sunday.  You can also park in the lot behind Shakespeare Pub two doors down, but do not park in El Indio's lot unless you want your car towed!  If you can’t find parking next to the restaurant, there’s always LOTS OF PARKING on San Diego Avenue and the adjacent side streets just past the Chevron station across Washington Street.  So please don't drive yourself crazy endlessly going around in circles waiting to pounce on that perfect spot when there's TONS OF PARKING less than three blocks away!

WINE QUANTITIES

We'll be pouring 3-5 ounce tasting portions of wine (see the line-up above) totaling 16 ounces, plus a 5 ounce cocktail or the equivalent of over three-quarters of a bottle of wine per person.  Pour buckets are provided for designated drivers.

WINE SALES

Although some wines may be in limited quantities, all wines poured at this dinner will be available for purchase at the restaurant until sold out.  We reserve the right to limit sales of any rare or allocated wines at our discretion.

WINE NOTES & BOTTLE PRICES

2019 Bokisch "Terra Alta Vineyards" Albariño ~ $17

(Lodi) Winemaker's Notes: Well balanced with engaging aromatics of tangerine zest, star fruit, orange blossom and lychee.  Bright acidic flavors of lime zest, guava, green apple and a touch of almond with a long clean finish.

2017 Bokisch Garnacha ~ $19

(Lodi) Winemaker's Notes: Light garnet hue with aromas of baking spices, French vanilla bean, McIntosh red apple and cherry vanilla ice cream with a hint of smoke in the background.  Crisp, refreshing flavors of pomegranate, cranberry, orange peel, and black pepper on the palate.  Delicate but firm tannic structure with a long bright finish.

2017 Bokisch Graciano ~ $21

(Lodi) Winemaker's Notes:  Savory, meaty aromas combine with baking spices, toasted cedar, blueberry jam and lavender. Textured flavors of dark berries, blueberry syrup, crushed violet, lavender and crushed greens delight the taste buds.  Ends with a hint of smoke in the lingering finish.

2014 Tizona "Gran Reserva" Tempranillo ~ $44

(Lodi) Winemaker's Notes: The barrels for this wine were selected for their aging potential.  Five years in the making and a vision of Markus and Liz Bokisch for years, the Gran Reserva doesn’t disappoint.  It has a deep purple color that turns to an intense brick red as you swirl it.  Mouthwatering aromas of cocoa, anise, dark cherry, and forest canopy jump out as it opens.  Initial flavors of dark cherry, dark chocolate, and cedar succumb to secondary flavors of cinnamon, rich leather, and ripe blackberry.  Truly an evolving wine drinking experience that should be contemplated and enjoyed slowly.  Close your eyes and enjoy the supple tannins and extremely long and satisfying finish.

Carajillo Cocktail

A traditional coffee-based Spanish cocktail also popular in Mexico and Argentina.  It can be served hot or cold, and is typically made by combining two parts espresso with one part Cuarenta y Tres, or Licor 43, a Spanish vanilla flavored liquor supposedly concocted with 43 secret ingredients.  We experimented with that formula and discovered that we liked it much better when the amount of Licor 43 was doubled (duh!) and served on the rocks.  We pre-chilled strong black coffee (so it wouldn’t melt the ice and dilute the flavor of the drink) and added a healthy shot of heavy cream for extra body and texture and to give it a more “desserty” flavor.  If you want to re-create this at home, our version is simply equal parts strong black coffee (freshly brewed and then immediately chilled), Licor 43 and heavy cream served on the rocks.

THE FINE PRINT

Due to fluctuations of supply, we reserve the right to make substitutions of equal or greater value in case any of the wines or foods become unavailable.  Please, ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY NO ONE UNDER THE AGE OF 21 ... even if your babysitter flakes out on you at the last minute!

Hope to see you here.  Buon appetito and cheers!
