Based on tastings of hundreds of wines on site in Sicily during 2019, I’ve come to the conclusion that quality is rising faster in Sicily than anywhere in Italy…and arguably anywhere in the world. The best whites are every bit as impressive as the reds, though they are much less well known. Growing areas far beyond uber-fashionable Etna are now competing at the very highest level of quality. Styles range from very traditional to quite flashy and modern, and the interplay between varied soil types and different grape varieties results in an array of excellent wines that deserve the sharpest attention…before prices catch up with quality.
