Neal Rosenthal’s Mad Rose Journeys announces Chef in Residence, a new journey offering in 2020. For Spring 2020, Chef in Residence will be San Francisco’s Chef Matt Strauss of Heirloom Café. His residence will be for in Spring: March 30-April 5, 2020.
Neal Rosenthal (Rosenthal Wine Merchant) founded Mad Rose Journeys in 2017 to offer small groups of curious people a step farther into exploration and connection with people and place. With Neal himself along with his creative director Victoria Anstead, serving as tour guides for these journeys, travelers (only up to 8 people per trip) experience special access to small family producers of wine, cheese, honey and olive oils throughout France and Italy as well as special adventures like a Truffle Adventure and special opportunities to meet artisans, artists and experience their work. The relationships that Neal has cultivated over the last 40+ years allows him to share these priceless original experiences with Mad Rose Journeys.
More about Chef in Residence program:
The program is based at Closerie Les Capucines where the guests spend the first 3 to 4 days of the week immersed in the culture, cuisine and wines of the Jura while the resident chef prepares lunches and dinners, conducts cooking lessons and searches the region for sources via the open air markets of Arbois, Dole or even Lyon and other producers of local culinary specialties, e.g. escargots, flour, chocolate and more. The latter part of the week includes visits to the Cote d’Or in Burgundy to visit with renowned wine producers, each of whom is part of the RWM portfolio, and a stay in Lyon to explore the art and culture of that great city. The trip begins and ends either in Geneva or Lyon depending on time of year and preferences of the traveling group.
For Chef Strauss’ residence, two Michelin starred chefs will also be in collaboration: Steven Naessens of Maison Jeunet (two star Michelin in Arbois, the village where La Closerie is situated) and Jean-Paul Jeunet, the acknowledged master of Jura cuisine whose family owned and operated the Jeunet restaurant for several generations (also two star status in Michelin). Both will cook for the group as well as instruct and also assist in the sourcing of products for the kitchen.
The program was established to focus greater attention on the food, wine, culture and natural beauty of the Jura, a region Neal adores and which is not on the typical tourist trail.
