Happy Holidays! Please join us for our very popular BYOB community dinner, scheduled for Saturday December 21st at 6 p.m. We're planning a very special edition so that you can celebrate the holidays with us with festivity and cheer. Even though we all tend to lose perspective at this time of year, often finding joy further and further from our grasp and peace of mind a phenomenon that takes place months after the holidays are over (and the credit card bills are paid), we would like to create a little pocket of community, cheer, and hope at The Voluptuous Table. Getting together over conversation, good food, and wine helps bring us back to what the holidays are all about: love, gratitude, and most of all, being able to experience the present moment with others. In that spirit, we're planning to bring you a lavish Italian-American feast and some special musical guests (and if you are musical, please let us know if you would like to be included in the program). We'll start out this special evening with an Aperol Spritz. This refreshing cocktail is built from Prosecco (an Italian sparkling wine), a generous splash of Aperol (a slightly bitter liqueur with lots of citrus notes), a little seltzer water, and a bright garnish of fresh orange. We hope you enjoy this cocktail (as it's one of Vindaloo's favorites) and invite you to get to know your fellow dinner guests or chat up the chef while you also savor a serving of Italian Wedding Soup, one of the most-requested soups anywhere, it seems--studded with adorable little pork and beef meatballs and enriched with strands of egg, ribbons of tender endive, and topped with freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Before we dive into Carbohydrate Heaven and after you sit at the table, you'll be served a large, chopped Italian salad with house-made creamy garlic dressing and lots of goodies: crunchy romaine lettuce, chopped red onion, black olives, chickpeas, shredded Mozzarella cheese, and strips of roasted red peppers. Cool, crisp and crunchy, this chopped salad is also one of my favorites.  Then, indulge in the real reason we all LOVE Italian food: CARBS!! There are three choices for the evening: paccheri (rigatoni pie) with peas, ham and a lovely rich cream sauce; meat and cheese ravioli with a delectable house-made marinara sauce; and angel hair pasta done simply in good extra virgin olive oil and lots of garlic and topped with buttery, lemony baked shrimp scampi--a very special version done with crispy panko bread crumbs. We'll serve buffet style with plenty of freshly grated Parmesan on the table for you to add to your pasta. For those of you wondering about wine pairings: since our meal is mainly about pastas done with a variety of sauces and finishing ingredients, you can choose a white or a red to suit your fancy. A crisp Pinot Grigio or a Trebbiano di Lugana work well with creamy, cheesy sauces; a Verdicchio or Vernaccia is perfect with the butter, garlic and shrimp pasta. For the tomato-based sauce, a Primitivo (Italian Zinfandel), a Montepulciano, a Sangiovese, or a Nero d'Avola are all good red choices. And for our sweet finish, you'll experience the best tiramisu on the planet: espresso and rum-soaked lady fingers layered with rich, sweetened mascarpone cheese and dusted with dark cocoa powder and dark chocolate shavings. What about lemon Italian ice? Pish! The holidays call for decadence, and The Voluptuous Table delivers! Let's save Italian ice for January, when you are getting ready for bikini season. A bottomless cup of Community Coffee or your own personal pot of hot tea is the perfect accompaniment to the tiramisu, and please make sure to ask for one of our many house-made liqueurs (I hear that the limoncello is divine) or other offerings as a lovely way to end your meal. Of course, if you've overdone it, we can offer you a choice of amari to help you digest your meal better. So please join us on Saturday the 21st at 6 p.m., bring your friends and family, a bottle of wine and your musical talent.
