2019 was a tough year for wine production worldwide. We lost two wineries (another 29 suffered fire damage) and countless acres of vineyards to fire in California. Wildfires have also damaged vineyards and wineries in Australia, Chile and Portugal. In France, the country’s highest-ever temperature, 114.6˚, was recorded in the Languedoc on June 26th. In fact, the ‘hottest’ topic in wine these days is climate change and how producers are coping with it. New grapes and regions are emerging, and great care is being taken in the vineyards with regard to sustainability and carbon footprint. It is time to take a wine tour to access how climate change has already affected wine styles and to get a glimpse of future trends. We will examine a riveting sparkler from England, how Loire, Germany and Michigan have benefited from warmer temperatures, how Chablis and Bordeaux are evolving; a grape – Touriga Nacional – to take notice of, an emerging star in Australia, a timeless classic from Chianti Classico and how Napa Valley is standing up to its trials. It’ll be whirlwind tour!
