PINOT TASTE OFF - we learn, we laugh, we love to taste... BLIND! BONUS: this session has a very special guest!
About this Event

PINOT TASTE OFF - we learn, we laugh, we love to taste... BLIND... 21 wines when sold out... Which is Central Coast, Which is Northern California, which is not? Can you find the Chilean? The Oregon or New Zealand.... what is the difference? We call it... Central Coast vs. Northern California vs. The World

This SPECIAL EDITION we will have commentary with Rex Pickett and if you have ever met Rex before, you know he has a strong and well defined opinion about all things in life… and loves to share. This will be a dynamic wine night - for the ULTIMATE PINOT FANS. We will even taste the wine that REX is lending his name to, from CHILE (the location of the novel for SIDEWAYS III).

We cover a ton of ground and have a ton of fun doing it... and at the end of the night we pick a favorite or two!!! It's the PINOT TASTE OFF - limited to 24 guests. We use the best in glassware, and provide a petite cheese plate from Chefs’ Warehouse. No prerequisite here - come and learn... experts are encouraged to be vocal.

Class is hosted by Ian Blackburn, 25 year wine industry Vet and he knows many of these producers - personally. Bring a friend or 3 or come along and make new wine friends. Our downtown loft is private, comfortable, and well-suited.

DRESS CODE: "come as you are" - some make a night of it and roll out to the dozens of hot-spots within walking distance of the loft.

PARKING: UBER or LYFT are recommended and as easy as can be, but street-parking is free in the Arts District.

ABOUT: REX PICKETT - Author, Wine Lover, Commentator

Rex Pickett is the critically-acclaimed author of the novel Sideways, upon which the Oscar-winning Alexander Payne film of the same title was adapted. Not only did the film win over 350 awards from major critics and awards organizations and completely change the wine world, the film has continued to garner a worldwide cult following.

Rex was born in California and grew up in San Diego. He attended the University of California at San Diego where he matriculated summa cum laude with a Special Projects major, his diploma reading: "Specializing in Contemporary Literary and Film Criticism and Creative Writing."

Sideways the film was released in 2004 and went on to win over 350 awards from various critics and awards organizations, including 6 Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, 5 New York Film Critics Circle Awards, 5 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, 6 Indie Spirit Awards, 2 Golden Globes, et al. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. The film had an enormous impact on the world of wine, driving Pinot Noir sales – and prices – into the stratosphere and causing serious damage to Merlot, the grape variety the main character Miles expressed hatred for.

In 2011, Pickett released a sequel to Sideways, titled Vertical. That same year it won the Gold Medal for Popular Fiction from the Independent Publisher Book Awards.

In 2012 Pickett staged a play version of his novel Sideways at the Ruskin Group Theater in Santa Monica, California. It ran for six months and a production was later staged at the La Jolla Playhouse under the direction of Des McAnuff.

Pickett spent a year traveling in Chile, New York and Costa Rica and then worked on Sideways 3 Chile, set in the Chilean wine world. It was published in 2015.

ABOUT: Sideways Pinot Noir - Casablanca Valley

“I’d drink the sun if I could”

“Founded in 1998, Via Wines is certified 100% sustainable from vineyard to bottle. This Pinot Noir, from breathtakingly beautiful Casablanca Valley, showcases the unique characteristics of Via Wines’ Tapihue Vineyard, located mere kilometers from the ocean. This cool-climate vineyard, with its clay-loam soils situated on an ancient granite base, produces wines of extraordinary depth and floral aromatics. I envisioned the wine. Via Wines did the work. It’s time to taste the dream.” -- Rex Pickett
