Please join us Wednesday, September 25, 2019, when we welcome back Ken and Akiko Freeman, from Freeman Vineyard & Winery to our wine bar. Ken and Akiko are the dynamic duo behind the acclaimed Freeman Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays we’ve loved supporting for many years.
Soon after Ken and Akiko met in 1985 (which is a very sweet story I’m sure they’d love to tell) they discovered they shared a passion for graceful and refined Pinot Noir and Chardonnay they enjoyed in Burgundy but had difficulty finding in California. Their united dream was to create such wines of their own and become a respected California producer of these Burgundians styles. To do so, they spent significant time touring over 300 vineyard sites to find the precise terroir within the cooler hillsides of the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast. In 2001 they located the perfect site, renovated the old winery, and founded Freeman Vineyard and Winery in one of the coolest parts of Russian River Valley. The vineyard is cooled by morning fog and coastal breezes, which allow the grapes to ripen more slowly while maintaining refreshing acidity.
They immediately brought in winemaker Ed Kurtzman, who had already claimed his position as a master maker of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Akiko worked alongside Ed, where she soaked up his vast knowledge of cool climate viticulture and minimal manipulation winemaking. Thanks to her apprenticeship with Ed, Akiko is now the head winemaker and is living the couple’s dream of crafting world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Freemans are excited to show off what they were able to achieve with the 2017 vintage so please come and enjoy these great people and their exquisite wines.
