Cost: $40

Wherever it is produced, wine is inexorably linked to a region’s political, cultural and commercial history. This class will put those stories front and center. October is Pennsylvania Wine Month (as if we needed an excuse to explore the wine being made right in our backyard). So today we’ll look at the early days of winemaking in PA. (Did you know, for example, that America’s first commercial winery was in Montgomery County?)

As we sip through a complimentary tasting of surprisingly delicious local wines, we’ll discuss the oft-forgotten role our great commonwealth played in the development of the US wine industry, as well as the many barriers nearby winemakers have faced since then.

This class will be taught by Mike Madaio, WAID instructor and author of the upcoming book “Lost Mount Penn: Wineries, Railroads and Resorts of Reading,” which delves into the winemaking history of Southeastern PA and Berks County.

Seating is limited, as is wine, so be sure to purchase your ticket in advance. Classes are also subject to cancellation or rescheduling in the case of low enrollment.
