Summary

Book our Northern Spain tour package and spend unforgettable 12 days exploring the country’s astonishing architecture, beautiful landscapes, excellent food, and exceptional wines. Experience Barcelona tours by locals and get to know the soul of the city. Discover the famous Raval neighborhood in Barcelona and visit La Sagrada Familia and other Gaudí buildings. Walk down Passeig de Gràcia, explore the lush gardens of the Teatre Grec and visit the Fundació Joan Miró, one of the largest museums in the world.

After 3 unforgettable nights, you will pick up your rental car and continue your journey through Northern Spain from Barcelona. You will drive to Costa Brava region and its stunning coastal towns and indulge in the beauty of the Mediterranean coast. Take pleasure in amazing Spain tourist attractions such as the old town of Pamplona and medieval architecture of Girona, and taste excellent food and wine in local restaurants.​

Our Northern Spain tour also include tasting some of the best Txakoli white wines of Basque Country, discovering San Sebastian’s royal heritage and gastronomic culture as well as a guided cycling tour around Bilbao suburbs. You will have the opportunity to visit the worldwide famous Guggenheim Museum before we head for the coastal town of Ribadesella. You will wrap up your Northern Spain tour at Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galica known as the culmination of the Camino de Santiago (Saint James) pilgrimage route. 

 

Itinerary

 

Day 01 – Sunday - Barcelona

Arrival in Barcelona and check in to the hotel. You can take bus (better than subway) or taxi from airport into the city centre. Time off in Barcelona. Walk around the hotel to visit Gaudí buildings and Passeig de Gràcia.

Day 02 – Monday - Barcelona

After breakfast, time at your own leisure to visit the city, the Raval neighborhood, walk up Montjuit mountain, visit the beautiful Parc Guell, etc…

Day 03 – Tuesday - Barcelona

After breakfast, you can visit more attractions if you did’t have enough time or you can check out the artsy side of the city: walk around the lush gardens of the Teatre Grec and then head over to the Fundació Joan Miró, one of the largest museums in the world and home to a collection of over 225 paintings, 150 sculptures and graphic pieces by the Spanish surrealist painter, along with a number of works by his contemporaries. Also the MNAC (Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya), with pieces that represent Catalan art from the Romanesque period to the mid-20th century.

Day 04 – Wednesday - Costa Brava and Girona

After breakfast, pick up your car at the rental office in Barcelona city centre and drive to the beautiful coastal town of Cadaques (about two hour drive) and explore the Costa Brava towns. We recommend stopping in Peratallada on the way and then having lunch in Cadaques viewing the Mediterranean coast. In the evening drive to Girona city for the night and dinner at any of the many beautiful restaurants in the old area.

Day 05 – Thursday - Girona -Zaragoza-Pamplona-Mutriku-Basque Country

After breakfast, drive to Mutriku in Basque Country (about a six-hour drive). We recommend you to stop in Zaragoza on your way for lunch and discover the beautiful city and old town, as well as Pamplona. You will arrive to Mutriku to your beautiful accommodation set on a cliff with beautiful seaside and mountains surroundings.

Day 06 – Friday - Mutriku-Ondarrua

After breakfast, take the day off to rest after a long drive and to enjoy some of the beautiful walking trails around Mutriku. 

We recommend a short drive to Getaria for lunch or dinner and to try some of the best Txakoli white wines, a slightly sparkling, very dry white wine.

Day 07 – Saturday - San Sebastian​

After breakfast, drive to San Sebastian (about 45 minutes). On arrival, your local guide will meet you for a walking tour of San Sebastian’s old town. You will learn about the history and traditions of the city, its royal heritage and gastronomic culture.

In the afternoon, you’ll partake in one of the most traditional and local experiences: cooking and lunch at a Gastronomy Society with a visit to a local market. The privately owned Gastronomic societies are a cornerstone of Basque dining tradition and have existed in San Sebastian for over a century. They are members-only clubs for people who are passionate about cooking. It is a meeting place where those aficionados can come together to cook, socialize, play cards and often sing within a private friendly atmosphere. 

The kitchens are equipped to a professional standard and these societies can only be accessed by members or by special invitation. The food prepared in the Gastronomy Societies have their main emphasis on the quality of the fresh ingredients and on sharing high quality meals with friends and family. They are a truly Basque experience that should not be missed. 

In the evening, back to Mutriku for the night. Recommend to have dinner in Zarauz or Ondarrua (towns near hotel).

Day 08 – Sunday - Bilbao

After breakfast, drive to Bilbao (about 45 minutes) for a nice bike tour in the morning. At 10:30, you’ll enjoy a guided cycling tour around Bilbao suburbs following the footprints of the city’s industrial past, key to the transformation of the present day city. You will also stop for a “pintxo” on the way.

After lunch (on your own), visit the the Guggenheim Museum, described as the best building of the second half of the twentieth century that has completely transformed Bilbao, giving the city worldwide recognition and changing its image. Opened in 1997, it was designed by American architect Frank Gehry. 

In the evening, around 7:00 pm, pintxos tour for dinner by a local guide. You will drive then back to Mutriku (around 9:30 pm).

Day 09 – Monday - Asturias-Cantabric Sea Coast

After breakfast, drive to Asturias-Ribadesella (2.5 hours). Highly recommended to stop in the towns of San Vicente de la Barquera and Llanes on the way. 

On arrival to Ribadesella, check in to your beautiful hotel for the night. Ribadesella is a beautiful town with the Picos de Europa mountains just behind it and the ocean front. The estuarial town is located where the ocean meets the river Sella from which Ribadesella gets its name.

Day 10 – Tuesday - Asturias-Santiago de Compostela

After breakfast, time to walk around this beautiful village and hike some of the nearby trails to contemplate the amazing scenery of Picos de Europa. 

In the afternoon, drive to Santiago de Compostela (4 hours aprox.) We recommend you to stop in Tapia de Casariego and in Playa de las Catedrales in Ribadeo if the tide is low. 

Arrival to Santiago and check into beautiful boutique hotel and spa.

Day 11 – Wednesday - Santiago de Compostela

After breakfast, take the day to spend in Santiago to visit the Old town, attend a Pilgrim mass in the afternoon at the Cathedral (depending on the schedule) and watch the amazing “Botafumeiro” in action. 

You can then visit the famous Mercado de Abastos, food market near the Cathedral, where you can also have lunch in any of the little shops inside. After lunch, you can do a part of the final leg of the French Camino (5 Km.). 

For dinner we can recommend some nice restaurants such as Horta do Obradoiro (great local good food and beautiful place).

Day 12 – Thursday - Santiago de Compostela

After breakfast, drive to the drop off car rental location. End of our services.
