Galen  Glen Winery Trip - A Taste of Austria                                                                                         by Marty Cook

Galen Glen Winery is nestled between the Appalachian and Mahoning mountains on a high elevation fringe of Schuylkill County. It is here, while inhaling the panoramic view and languishing under the shade of an umbrella on the winery patio, that I enjoy a glass of wonderful Galen Glen wine. A myriad of descriptors come to mind: harmony; splendor; romance; awe! It is this cauldron of influences that daily impacts the creative juices of winemaker Sarah Troxell.

It is this higher elevation, cooler climate as well as the shale composition of the land that enable Sarah to make the world class wines of Galen Glen Winery. Their web site aptly summarizes the essence of Galen Glen wines and the winery’s terroir through the statement that “Our wines reflect a delicate tension of acid and ripeness, punctuated by a powerful sense of location.”

Galen Glen’s signature wine is Grüner Veltliner, which is also Austria’s most prominent white wine. Among other cooler climate wines grown at Galen Glen are Gewürztraminer and Riesling (both white German grapes), and Zweigelt (a red Austrian grape). In past European competitions, Galen Glen wines have risen to lofty levels of international critical acclaim. It is not infrequent that their wines have been mistaken for German and Austrian wines!

During our program on July 21st, all participants will have the opportunity to taste ten (10) Galen Glen wines. The choices will draw from everything on the Galen Glen wine tasting list, including their “Library Collection & Limited Availability” wines that are normally not available for tasting by the general public. These include some of their premium Stone Cellar series of wines, such as Galen Glen’s Stone Cellar 2017 Grüner Veltliner that scored 90 points from James Suckling; their Stone Cellar 2017 Fossil Vineyard Riesling that scored 88 points from James Suckling; and, their Stone Cellar Quartz 2014 Brut Sparkling, made in the true méthode champenoise.

So, take a scenic rural drive and join us for a field trip to Galen Glen Winery in Andreas, PA on Sunday, July 21st. An informative 3-hour program starts at 10:00 am, before the winery opens its doors to the general public. The program will begin with a detailed vineyard and winery tour led by winemaker Sarah Troxell, followed by a premium wine tasting and Q&A session. Travel time from the greater Harrisburg area is approximately 90 minutes; but, please verify travel times with your GPS. We recommend bringing a picnic lunch to enjoy with your favorite Galen Glen wines upon concluding the scheduled portion of the program. The winery offers an enclosed picnic pavilion as well as an outdoor seating area. Carpooling with friends is recommended.

Included in the cost of each registration fee is a $5 credit towards the purchase of Galen Glen bottled wine.
