When most people think of Catalonia, they think of Northeastern Spain and the areas surrounding Barcelona. But the ancient Principality of Catalonia originally spanned farther north through the Pyrenees Mountains and over the border with France, to encompass the French region now called Roussillon. While most of Catalonia was taken by the Spanish in the mid-17th century, and Roussillon was ceded to France, French Catalonia and Spanish Catalonia still share much in common, from a regional language to wine grapes and styles. This exciting tasting will trace Catalonia’s ancient borders—including French appellations like Roussillon, Collioure and Banyuls and Spanish appellations like Priorat, Cataluyna and Penedes—to show how regional wines transcend modern borders.
