Nothing in the wine world transcends the seductive, layered perfume of Nebbiolo: “Tar and Roses” says it all – a gentle floral fragrance floating above dusty deep earth tones. Add in black cherries & plums, sandalwood and tea, and you’ve got the poignant flavors of the Piedmont’s most noble red grape. Then … BAM! The super-drying tannin sets in. No worries, the arid mouthfeel is instantly softened by protein (beef, lamb), fat (oil, cheese) and salt. We’ll explore the hilly, fog-laden Piedmont in Italy’s far northeast through some of these wonderful producers: Vietti, Renato Ratti, Moccagatta, Luigi Giordano, Oddero, Ceretto, Produttori del Barbaresco, Michele Chiarlo, Sperino, Scavino. We’ll ease into this very special tasting with Nebbiolo’s friendly roommates Dolcetto and Barbera. Some tender white Arneis will open the door to red wine nirvana! We’ll be sure to provide tannin-smoothing little bites alongside these majestic reds – Langhe Nebbiolo, Barolo, and Barbaresco. A fine wine collector once commented that drinking Nebbiolo is like being kicked in the face by a ballerina! Well, we’ll try to make this a more soothing experience.
