Wine has a funny way of pulling people from many different walks of life into its captivating world. Software entrepreneur, Kevin Harvey and co-founder of Benchmark Capital is one such guy whose path was forever altered after tasting a Gary Farrell Pinot from Russian River Valley at a party in the early 90s. This indelible experience sparked Kevin’s curiosity about Burgundian Pinot Noir and led to an in-depth exploration into how terroir influences a wine’s profile. After planting vines in his backyard in Woodside and making a batch of wine in his garage, he was hooked and set out to seriously pursue wine production.

During his search for optimal vineyard sites in which to start his new endeavor, Kevin settled on the cool-climate, thin-soil slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains, flanked by the Pacific Ocean to the west and San Francisco Bay to the east. While this region didn’t carry the clout that Napa or Sonoma did, Kevin was intrigued by its diversity of soil and rock types, originally created when two tectonic plates collided to form the San Andreas Fault that bisected the mountain range. In the vein of the most prestigious Burgundian wines, Kevin aims to produce single vineyard wines from his seven distinctive sites (including one located in Anderson Valley) that reflect the unique terroir of each. Kevin and the Rhys team follow a “spare no expense” viticultural approach, practicing organic and biodynamic farming methods and planting very densely which oftentimes entails costly hand harvesting. The same philosophy carries over to the winemaking side of things, as labor-intensive foot treading is employed, and wine is fermented in 129 tiny vessels which keep every parcel of grapes separate.

The wines of Rhys Vineyards are stunning; they showcase the most graceful of frames and elegant of textures, all the while serving as genuine indicators of distinct terroirs. We hope you will join us on Wednesday, February 20th when we welcome Eric Sothern, Sales Director of Rhys Vineyards, to our wine bar to pour a flight of current releases. This will surely be a fun exploration of California cool-climate Pinot Noir and how a grape’s origin can profoundly affect its ultimate characteristics.
