Other Bubbles, or “It’s Not Champagne!”
Join us for a pre-Valentine’s Day celebration of sparkling wines from around the world. For only $45, taste over 30 sparkling wines – including a couple of sparkling sakes!
Did you know that only 8% of the sparkling wines of the world come out of Champagne, France, while more than 90% is produced outside this venerable region? Many bubbles are made around the world, some using the traditional (Champagne) method, some using other methods. In some cases the same grapes that comprise Champagne – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier – are used, but sometimes producers use other grapes – Riesling, Shiraz, for example – to create crisp, refreshing, complex, and delicious sparkling wines, and often at a fraction of the cost of real Champagne.
Additionally, changing global climate conditions are contributing to an increase in sparkling wine production in places formerly too cold to grow wine grapes. Tasmania, Patagonia, and England are three far-flung regions of the world now producing scintillating sparkling wines of depth and complexity. In the case of England, the wines are grown in the same “Paris Basin” soils of chalk as Champagne, which gives both wines their distinctive minerality and racy acidity.
On February 12, compare and contrast wines from countries around the world, including Cremant from France; Prosecco, Franciacorta and Lambrusco from Italy; Sekt from Germany; and Cava from Spain. And don’t miss the approachable New World sparkling wines from California, Oregon, and New Mexico, as well as Australian sparkling Pinot Noir, and an Australian sparkling Shiraz. We even have a couple of sparkling sakes from Japan!
Soak up the bubbles with some delicious cheese and charcuterie from our expanded gourmet department.
