Acrylic January, comprised of Denin Koch and Robert MacPartland, takes rock, pop and jazz standards and interprets them as spacious instrumental duets between guitar and double bass. The familiarity between Koch and MacPartland, combined with their instrumental prowess and taste, makes Acrylic January’s sound gentle and graceful with elements of playful interaction and tasteful improvisations. For their Via Girasole debut, they will offer their takes of classic songs about love, with selections for everyone from lifelong lovers to the recently single.

Acrylic January’smembers met at the Eastman School of Music, where each is pursuing a master’s degree. However, both musicians became accomplished in their own right before moving to Rochester. Koch has performed with a number of jazz giants, including Arturo Sandoval, Pat Metheny, Wycliffe Gordon, Branford Marsalis, Dee Daniels, Ellis Marsalis and Rosario Giuliani. He was also a member of several professional ensembles (including Spokane Jazz Orchestra, Bob Curnow Big Band, and Denin Koch Trio) and received numerous awards for his performances, compositions and research. MacPartland emerged from the St. Louis jazz scene and has performed extensively throughout the United States. He can be heard on pianist Ryan Benthall’s debut album and seen performing with various groups throughout Rochester.
