Syrah and Shiraz are dark-skinned grapes, almost black, that are used to produce primarily red wine. Why are there two different names for the same grape?

Find out the answer to this question and learn about  the difference between them while tasting Syrah/ Shiraz blends from around the world- only this Saturday!

Wines:

1.Chateau de Campuget Rose, France ,   $10.99   Best Buy!- Wine Enthusiast

This bend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache is nevertheless very pale in hue. the nose hints at wet stone, thyme and bay leaf, while the medium-bodied palate delivers a harmonious blend of red berries and citrus. Long on the finish, with mouthwatering persistence.

2. Antonio Sanguineti Nessun Dorma IGT, Italy   $17.99- Silvia’s Favorite!

“Nessun Dorma” is the favorite aria of “il Maestro” Antonio Sanguineti, and this wine is a steal! With vines carefully selected from all around Toscana, including Sangiovese from Capraia e Limite (Montalbano), Merlot from Gavorrano (Grosseto), and Syrah from Suvereto (Livorno), the Maestro has made a true “SuperTuscan.” The Merlot is intensely floral and elegant, while the Sangiovese is fresh and bright. The Syrah adds depth and body, offering a bold expression of forest-floor truffle, ripe cherry, and blackberry preserves.

3. Chave Crozes Hermitage Silene, France   $29.99 –The Wildcard!

The vineyards for Silène are hillside vineyards located in Larnage and Gervans. It is rare for Crozes to come from hillside granitic soil, as most of Crozes is situated on the alluvial valley floor. The granite soil produces a wine with more backbone and structure. The idea behind this Crozes is to balance the fruit of Syrah without compromising the tightness given by the granite.

4. Corvidae Lenore Syrah, Washington State   $14.99

Sourced from several vineyards throughout the Yakima Valley and the Horse Heaven Hills, Lenore Syrah shows the more opulent and balanced 2012 vintage with its fruit forward attack and rounded, rich mid-palate texture. Aging in predominantly neutral French oak maintains the bright berry and savory aromatics of this wild, gamey varietal.

5. Yalumba Patchwork Shiraz, Australia    $14.99

Deep and brooding with dark plum, licorice, anise and ripe fruits. There is a generous and inviting sweet depth of ripe fruit across the mid palate. The wine is moreish, full and fleshy. The palate is long and concentrated with a finesse of tannins to finish.

Wines will be accompanied by a selection of cheeses, crackers, artisanal breads &olive oil. The cost for one flight (a sample of each of the wines) will be $15.
