Wines of Portugal…. Anew by Dave Williams
If you are like me, you have experienced a few Portuguese wines, and recently were delightfully surprised that they were no longer the tannic or slightly sweet, nondescript beverage of the past. To that point, Portugal is no longer the bulk wine producer of mediocrity it once was. (Remember Mateus Rose?)
Joining the EU in 1986 significantly changed Portugal’s wine industry. An Institute of Vine and Wine was established along with regional wine commissions for each wine region. Oenology courses flourished in Portugal’s universities in the 1990s improving knowledge and processes. Many of the old cooperatives crumbled with the emergence of quintas (individual wine estates) and small growers. Investment funds from Europe supported equipment and facility upgrades. Simply, nothing short of a revolution occurred following Portugal’s EU membership. Today Portugal has a selection of fine wines to offer the world as never before, many at very reasonable prices. And since nothing in grape growing or wine making achieves results overnight it was appropriate to let time pass before assessing the changes. So maybe NOW is the time to experience Portugal, anew!
So with the help of a friend who happens to be the PLCB Luxury Buyer for Portuguese wines, and Massimo Squitieri of Winebow, we will experience a representative sampling of the new and improved wines of Portugal on Friday, March 15, 2019 starting at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Harrisburg.
