We do love our Champagne at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant, and we taste all year long to have a diverse, unique and inspiring selection. With all the fabulous and trendy grower-producers, we never forget the iconic brands, but we do choose them with the same degree of scrutiny. A few months ago, we tasted the Lanson portfolio with owner Enguerrand Baijot, and we decided immediately to host a flight night where we can bring him to our patrons. As one of the longest standing Champagne houses, Lanson consistently produces seamless non-vintage and vintage Champagnes in their own distinctive way.

Originally founded in 1760 by François Delamotte, an influential personality of the Reims society, the estate has changed hands and names over the years, yet its commitment to quality and adherence to the house style has not wavered. Since 2006, Lanson has been owned and operated by Philippe Baijot and his son Enguerrand Baijot, who is the North American Sales Director; together, they have invested in Lanson’s infrastructure and helped evolve the brand’s potential, all the while remaining faithful to the unique traditions and style of the house.

As one of the larger houses with endless competitors, Lanson sets itself apart in many ways. They are one of the few producers in Champagne who has historically avoided malolactic fermentation, a process which softens the acid and imparts a creamy character in wine. Rather, the house philosophy is geared towards preserving acidity and varietal character in its wines. Thus, Lanson Champagnes, which are also notably Pinot Noir dominant, are fresh, vivid and incredibly age-worthy. They also include a relatively high proportion of reserve wines in their non-vintage blends (a minimum of 30% from at least 10 different harvests) and roughly 50% of Grand cru and Premier cru wine is going into these blends. And to make sure their wines have a delicious depth of flavor, all Lanson Champagnes — from entry-level to the top of the line —  are aged much longer than is required. The Black Label is aged for three years while the Gold Label, Extra-Age Brut and Extra-Age Rosé are all laid down at least five years.

We are thrilled to have one of the family members to elaborate firsthand on Lanson’s history and winemaking approach, and we hope you will join us on Wednesday, October 17th when we welcome Enguerrand Baijot alongside a flight of these spectacular Champagnes.
