Cost: $200

Known for its history as one of Napa Valley’s few remaining Ghost Wineries, Flora Springs celebrates Halloween in a big way again in 2018 by offering a new interactive paranormal winery tour at its Estate in St. Helena along with the release of four limited-edition Halloween-themed wines. The paranormal tour, led by Paranormal Investigator Devin Sisk and Ellen MacFarlane of Napa City Ghosts & Legends, will be held in the caves of Flora Springs 19th century Ghost Winery on Sunday, October 28 from 10:30-1:30. Guests will have the unusual and spine-tingling experience of “communicating” with some of Flora Springs more colorful historical figures, followed by a tasting of the winery’s Halloween-themed wines and a luncheon hosted by General Manager (and Halloween enthusiast) Nat Komes. Limited to 30 people, the cost of the experience is $200 per person.

Flora Springs also pulls out all the stops at The Room in St. Helena, with a stop-in-your-tracks skeleton art installation on the exterior and interior décor that includes a black-lit life-sized coffin, Morgue and Crematorium tasting rooms, scary movies and much more. Throughout October The Room offers special tastings of Flora Springs’ bewitching Halloween wines, one-of-a-kind bottlings made with fruit from the winery’s estate vineyard. Each wine features a label or etching created by Nat Komes in collaboration with both local and national artists and designers. No reservations are necessary for this tasting at The Room, an ideal locale for large groups.

“These are one-of-a-kind wines Flora Springs makes purposefully for the holiday, and we set the bar high in terms of quality,” says Komes, who takes his inspiration from album cover art, comic books, children’s book illustrators and other artists he comes across to create these annual offerings. “We use some of the best fruit from our estate property, including Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Because these vineyard blocks are small, they lend themselves perfectly to these limited-edition bottlings.”

This year’s releases include:

2016 All Hallows’ Eve Cabernet Franc ($55) – Flora Springs has made the All Hallows’ Eve 100% Cabernet Franc from the Flora Springs estate vineyard in Rutherford for several years. The label for this vintage was created by Emmeline Forrestal, a children’s book illustrator who wove together traditional Halloween imagery for a tableau that is unsettlingly eerie and beautiful.

2016 Ghost Winery Malbec ($60) – This 100% Malbec from the Flora Springs estate vineyard in Rutherford features a hand-drawn etching of the winery’s historic stone cellar, evoking early Flora Springs labels in the look and typeface.

2014 Drink in Peace Merlot ($130; etched/hand-painted; glows in the dark; comes in coffin-shaped gift box) – This wine pays tribute to traditional Day of the Dead artwork with hand-etched and painted bottle art that glows in the dark! This one-of-a-kind wine comes packaged in Flora Springs’ infamous Coffin Box, available only as part of this set.

2013 Black Moon Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($250; Magnum only; Note: Sold Out) – For this Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend Nat worked with Dennis McNett, whose work has appeared in museums, galleries, on skateboards, and even on Van’s shoes. Here McNett has illustrated the concept of a ‘black moon’ with etched and hand-painted artwork featuring the phases of the moon juxtaposed with images of bats in flight.

Flora Springs Ghost Winery is open for tours by appointment all year long. Tickets for the Interactive Paranormal Winery Tour as well as more information about Flora Springs Halloween wines and the October tastings at The Room are available at https://www.florasprings.com/events/  or by calling 866-967-8032.

About Flora Springs Winery & Vineyards

Founded in 1978 by John and Carrie Komes and Julie (Komes) and Pat Garvey, Flora Springs Winery & Vineyards is located at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains in the northwest corner of Napa Valley’s Rutherford appellation. Named after John and Julie’s mother, Flora, and for the natural springs on the winery property, Flora Springs has been a family affair through three generations. As both artisan winemakers and growers, the family is committed to the traditions of fine winemaking and the responsible stewardship of its 650 acres of vineyards. Today, ninety percent of Flora Springs’ red wines are sourced from its organically-farmed estate vineyards.
