Petaluma, September 2018 --- The public is invited to a benefit for victims of the October fires on Saturday, September 22, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The benefit was organized by Kaveh Azari, a co-proprietor of Azari Vineyards in Petaluma. The event will take place at the winery in Petaluma. The event will consist of a feast including wood-fired pizza, salads donated by Lombardi’s Gourmet Deli and BBQ and wines from Azari Vineyards. Guests can also participate in a silent auction to win gifts from an array of local businesses. There will be live music by local musicians and comments by dignitaries.

The winery is located at 1399 Spring Hill Road in Petaluma (94952). Carpooling is recommended. Tickets will be available at the door, but advance ticket purchase is recommended: https://www.universe.com/events/azari-vineyards-wildfire-benefit-tickets-petaluma-5LVCTH

“Last year's fires stole so much from us,” says Kaveh Azari. “They claimed so many homes, and with them, all the things of a life: letters and pets, books and wedding bands. The trauma of losing everything at once hit everyone—rich and poor, documented and undocumented, insured and uninsured—but the ongoing struggle of trying to reassemble a post-fire life is affecting the most vulnerable among us the worst. At Azari, we knew we needed to do something, but we weren’t quite sure how to run a benefit in a way that directly helps those that need it the most. We are trying an experiment. For this benefit we are selling tickets on a pay-what-you-can basis, with 100% of sales being split evenly among a number of beneficiaries (as of September 4, there are 32 families). This might end up meaning that many families get a little help, or we might raise enough to make a meaningful impact in some lives. This is an experiment in community building, all of us coming together to lift all of us up. We'll share wine and stories and help each other rebuild our homes and hearts,” he added.

Families adversely impacted by the fires are encouraged to sign up to be beneficiaries of the event here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdReZu0ap3Hl4GPL9k9Kk65m0hZ6Q4HJtqDhWq1e0NDAKD_wQ/viewform

The Azaris have created a wine whose partial proceeds will be donated to Rebuild Wine Country: the wine is Rebuild Red, and is available for $18.00 at http://www.drinkcorkscrew.com/buy-corkscrew/2016-rebuild-red . As Kaveh explains: “We created this blend to support the rebuilding of wine country after the devastating 2017 fires. The grapes will always be sourced from family farms in the affected areas. This is going to be a long ride, and we are ready to roll our sleeves up and get to work. We are donating $2 from every bottle to Rebuild Wine Country.  They are using 100% of the money they raise to create new homes. They are also making it easy for the community to access information and resources.” This merlot-based wine displays ripe red cherry and forest floor on the nose, with a palate of dark cherry and portobello mushrooms.

Azari Vineyards’ current releases are 2012 Shiraz ($60.00), 2013 Petite Sirah ($60.00), 2013 Pinot Noir ($75.00), 2010 Shiraz ($60.00), 2014 Pinot Noir ($75.00) and 2017 Chardonnay ($35.00).

Founded in 1988, Azari Vineyards is a spectacular 40-acre estate in the heart of the Petaluma Gap appellation in Sonoma County. It was 1988 when the Azari family first chanced upon what has become Azari Vineyards.  The Iranian-born couple, Kamal and Parichehr, were taking a small drive north from their home in Marin county to show their two children Sonoma county and its fabled greenery. With one look, the couple heard the land whisper to them; although it was only a humble lot of untilled land, the small parcel sang of infinite possibilities. Thirty years later, the two children have been joined by a third, the small parcel has been transformed to a magnificent vineyard, and the Azaris have long called this estate their home; yet Kamal and Parichehr still hear the same song they did the day they first gazed upon the rolling, fog-swept hills.  Together with their daughter Pari and American-born sons Kaveh and Cyrus, the Azaris have created a cross-cultural oasis on their lush, secluded vineyard estate. As in all aspects of their lives, the Azaris’ winemaking approach is steeped in a Persian heritage of hospitality and appreciation for nature’s simplicity. Pinot Noir vines planted in the Pacific Maritime stream of the Petaluma Gap were an obvious choice, but they also decided to add a secondary crop of cool-climate Shiraz, harkening back to Kamal’s family roots in Shiraz, Iran. The winery is open by appointment only and also offers a Wine Club More info: 707/347-9846, info@azarivineyards.com, https://www.azarivineyards.com/ .
