New York’s premiere winegrowing region specializes in aromatic varieties like Riesling and Gewürztraminer. The region is also finding great success in cool-climate reds like Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. The terroir of the Finger Lakes is special because of the microclimate created by the lakes, which serve as a natural, air temperature-regulating system. Extreme cold weather in the winter is buffered by the deep waters of the long, narrow lakes and the hills along the water provide an ideal terroir for ripening grapes.
