A Cabernet Franc Experience by Dave Williams
I am sure most of you have experienced Cabernet Franc as a blending grape, more than likely in a Bordeaux blend where it plays a supporting role to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. However, I suspect many of you have not tasted Cab Franc as a stand-alone grape. It has come out of the shadows from playing a secondary role in the last 25 or so years to where it now is receiving attention from around the globe. Regarded as a cool climate, black grape, born in France, it now has presence in some warmer locations in Italy, US, Hungary, Chile, South Africa, Spain, Argentina and even Canada. It could best be described as a medium bodied, medium-high acid, reduced tannin red that is an ideal food pairing wine. Because of the “B” level of notoriety it’s usually a great value wine. For those reasons alone you should become more familiar with Cab Franc.
To that point, we plan to provide you a global experience with Cab Franc as it expresses itself in a range of climates, soils and winemaking practices. We will certainly experience the Loire Valley where it began in the 17th century at the Abbey of Bourgueil. From there we will be off to South America, Northwest and even Mid-Atlantic in the US and possibly Italy and South Africa.
In addition, we are planning to have some aroma and flavor essences to complement your Cab Franc experience and to help you identify key flavor components. On top of that we are considering conducting the tasting blind to eliminate location preferences. Of course we will share the identity of the wines but probably not until after you have experienced them. So plan to learn about Cab Franc on Friday, September 21, 2018 at the Hilton Harrisburg at 7 p.m.
