When I met Christine Vernay and her husband Paul Amsellem at the old store 2 years ago, I was star struck. Here I was standing in the back room of the old store with one of the greatest winemakers in the Northern Rhone whose wines are in the top 10 that I have tasted in my life. Christine was quiet and reserved, like her flagship Coteau de Vernon Condrieu, while her husband Paul was more gregarious like the Pied de Samson Viognier (a fantastic value). We tasted current and older releases and put to rest any notion that her wines don't age. The older Condrieus were still full of life with impeccable balance, and youthful acidity that kept the wines very fresh tasting. The current releases were amazing as always and solidified my thought that her wines should held in the same esteem as those of Chave, Verset and Allemand. - Louis
Well enough reminiscing, let's chat about this fantastic Northern Rhone class we will be teaching at The Wine Outlet in McLean featuring the wines of Vernay. Jon and I will go over the appellation and will expertly pair the wines with cheeses, pates and charcuterie. Wines we will taste will be:
2016 Pied de Samson Viognier- better than most Condrieus
2015 Coteau de Vernon Condrieu - This is the best Condrieu made in the world - simple as that
2015 Cotes du Rhone Red Ste. Agathe - 100% Syrah
2015 St. Joseph Terre d'Encre - My favorite St. Joseph.
2015 Cote Rotie Blonde du Seigneur- A fantastic Cote Rotie that just speaks of Christine's passion for Syrah.
Class will be 6/23/2018. Cost is 35.00 per person and seating is very limited. We look forward to seeing you for this wonderful event.
