Back in the 80’s, adventurous California wineries experimenting with Rhone grape varieties, such as Syrah and Viognier were informally dubbed “The Rhone Rangers”. Their unofficial leader was Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon, who graced the cover of the Wine Spectator complete with black mask, white hat and white horse. Since then, these grapes have found homes in many regions. We’ll try examples from pioneers like Tablas Creek and Bonny Doon in California, great producers including Pride Mountain, Neyers, and Stolpman, and far-flung adventurers in Australia, Chile, and South Africa.
