The German Society of Pennsylvania is proud to host the annual Philly Bierfest, in collaboration with the ferocious female athletes of Philly Roller Derby. This world-class beer tasting event celebrates Pennsylvania’s German brewing heritage. Among American states, Pennsylvania has the longest history of German immigration, the largest population of German-Americans and the strongest bonds to German culture. Pennsylvania is also earning recognition in the beer world for its lagers and pilsners, weizens and bocks – German styles which see greater emphasis here than in other parts of the country. This state is home to the 2 largest independent breweries in the USA, which happen to be lager-centric, and even its smallest, newest brewers tend of offer more German-style beers than those found elsewhere.

The 7th annual Bierfest will take place Saturday Feb. 24th, 2018 from 2:00pm to 5:30pm, with early access available for VIP ticketholders. The event features delicious German-style beers from over three dozen brands from Pennsylvania and Germany, spread between 2 beer halls. Attendees will enjoy German and American live music, from Polkadelphia’s oompah-funk to  soulful bluegrass, plus variety acts like rafter-roaring Roller-Derby Arm-Wrestling and eye-popping cabaret-themed Berlin-Style BEERlesque (PG-13).

Bierfest offers educational content for the beer-curious, as well, with a Brewer’s Discussion Panel in the Bierfest Academy and interactive lessons in beer basics in the Bierfest Learning Lounge. VIP ticketholders will have a chance to indulge in Bierfest’s offerings a full hour before general admission begins, and the exclusive VIP Plus package includes a fascinating “ German Beer Seminar” led by drinks author Marnie Old .

Bierfest is a family-friendly and community-supporting event.  Supervised 'kinder-care' and ‘beer-less’ tickets are available for thirsty parents and designated drivers.  The athlete-owned Philly Roller Derby are pouring to raise funds for their league’s travel to tournaments, as well as their campaign to build their own flat-track practice facility.  Bierfest also benefits the Brewers of Pennsylvania, an organization dedicated to bringing Pennsylvania-based brewers together to support and protect their common and individual interests, including the promotion of Pennsylvania beer across the country.

“Locals may not realize that Pennsylvania brewers lead the nation in championing beer styles of German heritage, from refreshing pilsners to malty doppelbocks,” says Victory Brewing Company president Bill Covaleski, who is also president of the Brewers of Pennsylvania trade association.  “Bierfest is a perfect showcase for what should be a point of pride for Philadelphia's beer lovers."

Nearly two dozen Pennsylvania craft and legacy brewers will participate in Bierfest, including: Barren Hill Tavern & Brewery [Lafayette Hill], Free Will Brewing Co.  [Perkasie], Lancaster Brewing Co.  [Lancaster], Lion Brewery [Wilkes-Barre], Penn Brewery [Pittsburgh], Philadelphia Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Roy-Pitz Brewing Co. [Chambersburg], Samuel Adams [Breinigsville], ShawneeCraft Brewing Co. [Shawnee], Sly Fox Brewing Co. [Phoenixville], St. Benjamin Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], Susquehanna Brewing Co. [Pittston], Tröegs Brewing Co.  [Harrisburg], Victory Brewing Co. [Downingtown], Yards Brewing Co. [Philadelphia], and the oldest and largest independent brewer in the USA, Yuengling & Sons Brewery [Pottsville].

Over two dozen brands of German imported beers will be poured, ranging from high-profile flagships to lesser-known artisanal brews.

The German Society of Pennsylvania is a nonprofit organization founded in 1764, devoted to furthering the understanding of German and German-American contributions to the growth of American history and culture from the past to the present, and into the future. Executive Vice-President Tony Michels is a Bierfest co-founder and organizes Philadelphia's German Heritage Festival.

Philly Roller Derby is a skater-owned and operated roller derby league and a proud member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Since their inception in 2005, this league of athletic women on wheels has brought roller derby back to Philadelphia.

Brewers of Pennsylvania is a non-profit trade advocacy organization whose mission is to responsibly serve the needs of Pennsylvania’s diverse beer-drinking audience and to empower the state’s brewers to join together to support and protect their common and individual interests.

Bierfest co-founder Marnie Old is a noted Philadelphia-based drinks author, a columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News, and one of the country’s top expert speakers on wine and beer.
