Hidden at the base of the Italian Alps is the Alto-Piemonte, the highest elevation wine growing region in Piedmont, Italy. The region has a rich & deep history with the Nebbiolo grape; in the 19th century it was more popular and noteworthy than the Barbaresco and Barolo wine regions in the Langhe, Piemonte.

The generally cool climate, volcanic and iron rich soils yield bright and mineral wines that can age effortlessly for decades. They are typically not as big and brooding as their Langhe counterparts: softer tannins, notes of violets and rose petals, these wines speak to the finesse of the Nebbiolo grape.

Silvia Barbaglia and her father created Azienda Agricola Barbaglia in 1999. Their wine making philosophy is all about precision as they closely monitor the wine-making process from grape to wine, using no chemicals. Counter to the area’s tradition of blending varietals, the Barbaglia family chooses to vinify separately as to highlight each grape’s character as well as the Alto-Piemonte terroir.

Silvia will join us at Lupa Tuesday January 21st to walk us through her four wines accompanied by a five course Piemontese inspired tasting menu prepared by Chef James Kelly.
