Level 3 is an advanced survey course designed for students who already possess a basic grasp of the world’s major wine grapes, appellations, regions and wine labeling. This course examines the major wine varietals and regions in-depth, including the underlying causes for the wines’ characteristics. Level 3 also exposes the student to lesser-known regions. Viticulture, vinification, product pricing/differentiation and packaging aspects for wine and spirits are covered. Developing a sound tasting technique is a major focus for this course with instruction on a systematic approach to tasting included in every session. A graduate of Level 3 will have improved their ability to speak authoritatively about wine regions and characteristics and advise others on wine selection and pairing.
WSET recommends fifty-six hours of self-study in addition to class time for this course. At the end of the course, the WSET Level 3 Certificate is presented to the candidates who successfully complete a multiple choice examination, several short essay questions, and a blind tasting examination.
