No one knows Malbec like the Catena family, and in this class we will taste the Single-Vineyard Malbecs that are blended to create Catena’s iconic Alta Malbec, along with the final assembled wine, as well as one other special treat from Catena. Argentina’s most illustrious winery, Bodegas Catena Zapata, began with the planting of the Malbec grape in Mendoza, Argentina in 1902 by Nicola Catena. In the 1980s, the transition of winemaking in Argentina to quality wines was begun by Nicola’s grandson, Nicolas Catena. By researching vines growing at higher elevations, Nicolas discovered that Argentina could produce world-class wine. By the 1990s, research eventually found that certain lots, blocks or even rows of vines produced special wines, and thus the Catena Alta wines were born. First came their Cabernet Sauvignon in 1994, Chardonnay in 1995, and finally in 1996, Malbec. Taste both the current vintages of Alta Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon with John Edwards of MundoVino, Catena’s U.S. Importer. John will then lead you through the special treat of tasting the five different components of and then the final blend of the 2015 Catena’s Alta Malbec.
