The Sommelier of Wine & Spirits Guild (www.spiritsomm.com) is pleased to offer the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines in Arizona! This is a certification program adaptable for beginner to intermediate level individuals interested in exploring wines and spirits at an in-depth level. With this program, you will gain a core understanding of wine and spirits through labeling terminology and by exploring the major grape varieties, raw materials, and regions of production. Upon successful completion, you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.
The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines program encompasses a boastful variety of wines from various regions of the world to taste using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting® (SAT) throughout the program. The Level 2 program breakdown is as follows;
Session 1 – November 17th, 10:00am - 6:00pm – Review of foundational material is covered along with an in-depth guided lesson on deductive wine tasting. Students will learn about general labeling terminology and factors affecting wine style, quality and price, as they taste their way through 6 samples exemplifying the learning material. Session 1 concludes with a tasting of 3 different Chardonnays and 3 different Pinot Noirs from across the globe after an in-depth lesson on those 2 principal grape varieties. The afternoon portion of the session covers an in-depth lesson on the remaining principal grape varieties; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache and Riesling. The lesson is accompanied by an expansive tasting of 2-3 wines of each varietal from various regions around the world.
Session 2 – November 24th, 10:00am - 6:00pm – Session 2 covers an in-depth lesson on the remaining principal grape varieties; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache and Riesling. The lesson is accompanied by an expansive tasting of 2-3 wines of each varietal from various regions around the world. Other major white grape varieties and other major black grape varieties are covered during session 3 as students taste their way through 12 different benchmark examples of wines depicted in the lesson. The afternoon session includes a lesson on sweet wines, sparkling wines and fortified wines. Each lesson is accompanied with an impressive deductive tasting panel. Session 4 is concluded with a comprehensive review session of the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines material in order to prepare for the final examination.
EXAMINATION – December 1st, 4:00PM – Students are administered a 50 multiple choice examination. Successful candidates receive a certificate and lapel pin.
