Sommelier of Wine and Spirits Guild (www.spiritsomm.com) is pleased to offer WSET Level 1 Award in Wines program in Scottsdale. Established in 1969 for the UK wine trade, the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) has since grown to become the global industry leader in wine and spirits education.
The Level 1 Award in Wines is perfect for wine enthusiasts or for individuals new to wine study. This qualification provides a hands-on introduction to the world of wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately.
November 18th, 6:00 - 10:00PM, Evening Session 1 – Through interactive activities, students learn about the parts of a grape, the basics of alcoholic fermentation, wine growing environments, wine production and wine styles. Students learn to calibrate their palates to determine sweetness, acidity and tannin levels in wine as well as determine how food affects wine through a food and wine pairing lab exercise. Evening session 1 includes a lesson on the storage and service of wine. This session includes an introductory deductive tasting lesson of 8 wines from the principal grape varieties. During the tasting lesson, students will learn about the characteristics of each grape variety and the differences between flavors and acidity levels in various regions of the world. The deductive tasting is followed up by a lesson on examples of wines around the world from the principal grape varieties.
November 19th, 6:00 - 8:00PM, Evening Session 2 – This session provides a comprehensive review. At the end the session, a 30 question multiple choice examination is administered. Students who receive a passing score on the exam receive a certificate and lapel pin.
