Savvy consumers and newbie tasters alike will understandably rely on critics’ ratings when educated wine staff aren’t around to give direction. Sophisticated buyers even familiarize themselves with specific writers from The Wine Advocate, Vinous and The Wine Enthusiast, be it Monica Larner, Josh Reynolds, Antonio Galloni, Stephen Tanzer, or Jeb Dunnuck. All of us can relate to critical ratings like *** 3 stars, A+, and 90 out of 100 points. But: are highly rated wines obviously better? Can we tell the difference? We’ll have the great fun of tasting a line-up of wines all rated 90 points or above from a favorite portfolio of ours, ironically called TWP, The Wine Poor Distribution; not so poor in quality! You sample 90+ rated French Champagne, elegant white Burgundy, thrilling dry Mosel Riesling, top Austrian Blaufrankisch, and a slew of West Coast artisan stars including a Napa Zin field blend from a vineyard planted in 1885, Cabernets sourced from iconic sites such as Beckstoffer To Kalon, and Petite Sirah made by Randy Dunn’s son!
