A.K.A. Way Beyond Retsina!  A trip to a modern Greek winery is a real eye-opener, revealing that this ancient land is once again a source for some of the world’s greatest wines. With its stunning terroir of mountain vineyards, volcanic soils, maritime climate and over 200 ancient grape varieties, the diversity and quality is amazing.  We’ll explore the northwestern reaches of Macedonia, over to the Halkidiki peninsulas south of Thessaloniki in the northeast, then down to Mt. Olympus, Attica and the peninsula of Pelopponese, ending up in the stunning Aegean Islands, notably Santorini and Crete.  These unique wines have terroir galore, expressed through noble native grapes such as the white Assyrtiko, Moschofilero, Malagousia, and Vidiano and the red Aghiorgitiko, Xinomavro, Liatiko, and the sweet Mavrodaphne.  We’ll have beautiful examples from leading producers such as Gerovassiliou, Katsaros, Alpha Estate, Sigalas, Skouras, Douloufakis, and Kir Yianni. Our own Greek Sommelier Madeline Triffon will be on hand to provide homegrown commentary, and to demonstrate correct pronunciation!
