Deep into the DMV’s summer heat and humidity, what could be better than a refreshing Spritz? Not much that we can think of! But while the bright orange Italian classic Aperol Spritz is certainly fun and refreshing, there’s so much more to Spritz. So join us in this fun, tasty, and very hands-on class and get to know the exciting world of aromatized wines and learn how to Spritz-‘em-up!
Our guide will be Jake Parrot of Haus Alpenz, and importer that has curated one of the country’s finest assortment of Vermouth, Americano and other aromatized wines. During the class, we’ll introduce you to six classic examples:
Dolin Vermouth Dry – Sure, this stylish French Vermouth makes a great Martini, but wait until you spritz it up and try it with a little goat cheese
Cocchi Vermouth di Torino – Based on Moscato wine and flavored with cocoa, citrus, ginger, and rhubarb, the last remaining Torino DOC Vermouth is rich and exotic and delicious
Cocchi Bianco Americano – “Americano” is a play on the Italian “amaricante" and nod to Americans' habit of adding bitters to cocktails. Quinine and citrus join the traditional gentian to create a refreshing white Aperitivo.
Cappelletti Rosso Americano – The short story: this is what to use instead of Aperol if you’d like more flavor and complexity in your Spritz!
Byrrh Grand Quinquina – Created in the 1870, this blend of Roussillon red wine and cincona bark (loaded with quinine) was once one of France's most famous aperitif wines. You'll love it with tonic and a bit of blue cheese
Cardamaro Vino Amaro - Wormwood, gentian, and quinine form the bittering backbone of most aromatized wines, but here cardoon and blessed thistle take on that role with a bit of oak for spice.
During the class, you’ll get a pour of each of our six aromatized wines and have the chance to sample them solo as Jake explains their history and construction. Then it’s Spritz time – following Jake’s lead, you’ll add a little tonic, soda, or ginger ale and a twist of this or hunk of that to make your own personal Spritz. Which you can then taste with a perfectly matched snack or two.
You’ll come out of the class with a bit of Spritz in your step and a new appreciation for this classic and all to often overlooked wine category.
