HONOREES ANNOUNCED for GAVIOTA COAST CONSERVANCY’S

COASTAL LEGACY 2019

JACK & LAURA DANGERMOND

(Santa Barbara, CA) Celebrating the gorgeous Gaviota Coast and the philanthropists who have led the way in preserving it, the Gaviota Coast Conservancy (GCC) is planning an elegant fête that will be the group’s first community-wide public fundraising event, Coastal Legacy 2019.  Honored guests, Jack and Laura Dangermond, who donated $165M to create the Dangermond Preserve, are GCC’s Coastal Legacy 2019 Honorees. Join us at this very special event on Saturday, September 21st from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the exquisite Music Academy of the West. Connect with others who are just as passionate about maintaining the last rural stretch of coastline in Southern California as it is now for generations to come.  See the website for more at www.GaviotaCoastConservancy.org.

Taking over the Marilyn Horne House, which was once the center of the Miraflores Estate, will create a setting to send you back to another time…another place. Throughout the afternoon, Seasons Catering of Ventura will be serving delicious appetizers along with libations from M.Special Brewing Company and Oreana Winery. Silent and live auction items will spur a philanthropic muse, and live music will make for an unforgettable experience.

Maintaining agriculture, ecological integrity and public access to the Gaviota Coast, is tantamount to GCC’s mission. Those points are the organization’s Three Pillars for which a stalwart group of concerned activists have been following, standing guard, and fending off interests from developers that are anxious to grab Gaviota land.  Steve Forsell, GCC Board President said, “To maintain the rural character of our coast, the Gaviota Coast Conservancy actively engages with landowners and developers and finds solutions for permanently protecting privately owned parcels.”

Now, with newly appointed Executive Director, Doug Kern, GCC truly stands ready to continue its mission of protecting the Gaviota Coast for present and future generations.  Kern has a solid background in ecological concerns.  He came to GCC from the Mendocino Land Trust.  “GCC is proud of its accomplishments, and striving ever higher to complete the task of providing for the permanent preservation of the Gaviota Coast. For 20 years Gaviota Coast Conservancy volunteers have protected these precious resources for all of us!  It is my great honor and privilege to join these passionate activists and help bring their tireless labor to fruition. It’s a very busy time with many opportunities for significant conservation.”

At 24,364 acres, with eight miles of coastline, the Jack & Laura Dangermond Preserve was once the largest privately-owned ranch on the Gaviota Coast. In December 2017, the Dangermonds donated $165 million to the Nature Conservancy (TNC). With their major donation, the largest TNC had ever received, the Dangermonds were able to purchase the Bixby Ranch, originally known as the Cojo-Jalama Ranch.

“Over the years, Laura and I have become deeply attached to this land. It is a very special place and one of the most unique land and ocean ecosystems in the world. It also happens to be the home to many globally important, rare, and endangered species,” said Dangermond.   “I think it’s very important for us as humans to be connected to our natural world…Laura and I have always been passionate about conservation.” He continued, “We hope our gift inspires and motivates other people and organizations to pursue similar opportunities to conserve remaining natural areas important to the future of our planet.”

Dubbed “the last perfect place” by many, the Dangermond Preserve was featured on the cover of the local weekly, Santa Barbara Independent. It said, “the nearly untouched property hugs California’s most prominent corner at Point Conception, where the lands and seas of the north meet those of the south… that unique geographic convergence makes the preserve an ecologist’s wonderland of biodiversity.”

Marc Chytilo, longtime General Counsel for GCC stated, “The establishment of the Dangermond Preserve is the single most significant Gaviota Coast event in the past 40 years. It accomplishes GCC’s mission of permanent preservation of the rural character of the Gaviota Coast for future generations. It removes the threat of development and land conversion from one of the most sensitive and threatened portions of California’s coast.”

Coastal Legacy 2019 is on Saturday, September 21 from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Music Academy of the West, 1070 Fairway Road, Santa Barbara. Parking on-site. Tickets are $125. For more information email: legacy@gaviotacoastconservancy.org or call GCC at (805) 683.6631.
