No one has done more to introduce wine lovers up and down the East Coast to the joys of great - AND great value - Austrian wines than Klaus Wittauer. In a perfect world, we'd get all of you on a plane to Austria to spend a week with Klaus visiting his outstanding stable of producers and getting to know Austria's unique wine culture and heritage first-hand. But in the absence of free flights to Europe, here's the next-best thing: The first of two evenings with Klaus tasting Austrian learning all about the country's unique wine grapes and regions.
In this first session, we'll focus on the area broadly known as the Niederosterrech - northeastern Austria including the famed regions of Kamptal, Wagram and Wachau. While these loess-heavy soils (and, yes, you'll learn what that means!) are most famous for sizzling Riesling and generous Gruner Veltliner, there are remarkable red wines here as well. We'll taste:
Steininger Grüner Veltliner Kamptal DAC 2017
Anton Bauer Grüner Veltliner Rosenberg 2017 (Wagram)
Tegernseerhof Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Bergdistel 2017 (Wachau)
Steininger Grüner Veltliner Kamptal DAC Reserve Lamm Vyd 2016
Tegernseerhof Riesling Federspiel Durnstein 2017
Tegernseerhof Riesling Smaragd Steinertal 2016
Steininger Zweigelt 2016
Anton Bauer Blaufrankisch “Artist Label” 2013
And paired with each wine: the kind of knowledge and insight only an Austrian native can share!
As always, As always, we'll serve light snacks with the wines and have plenty of time for questions.
