Is South Africa considered Old World or New? Maybe both! Many would say that their best wines manage to capture both the rich fruit of the New World and the earthy complexity of the Old World. In the 24 years of post-apartheid, this stunningly beautiful country has evolved into the world’s 8th largest wine-producing country. With the oldest soils on the planet and the most biodiverse floral kingdom, grape growing excels in the Cape Winelands of Constantia, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, and Swartland. Tonight, we’ll get a high def snapshot of South African wine through a range of varietals: Chenin Blanc (a.k.a. Steen), their most widely planted white; Sauvignon Blanc (very different from either Loire or New Zealand); Syrah-based Rhône blends (a particular strength); classic Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon; and different expressions of Pinotage, the unique cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsault.
