While Italian immigrants were among the first to plant vitis vinifera vines throughout California, by the second half of the 20th century, most Italian grapes were replanted to French varietals. Over the last several years, that dynamic has changed, and new wineries, from Unti to Orsi, Folk Machine to Matthiason, are all offering New World expressions of Italy’s Old World grapes—much as the old spaghetti western films were made in Italy or by Italian filmmakers while featuring American actors. With similar climates and soils to bind them, tasting them is a fascinating education on how styles and approach influence the finished product.
